Triangle Crayons

5/20/2024

Such a simple resource. I knew these existed, in general, but I did not realise how useful they were to my classroom until this year. I have taught vision students for over four years, but this and last year I had a student who was still experiencing a wide variety of new things in the world.

Last year we experimented using markers that I had taped to a piece of paper with braille labels. While the student appreciated the gesture, we encountered the major problem that the student ended up with marker all over their hands. I wanted to find a solution for this year that would give the student a better experience and would also allow them to continue to participate in the activity.
I spoke to the vision teacher and they recommended triangle crayons as something more easily usable for the student. Upon buying the pack I printed braille labels of each colour of crayon. I did this using a brailling machine and sticker paper. I then cut them out and put them on each crayon. The student loved them and took them home to keep this year.
Triangle crayons are great for motor skills and can help students with limb differences or motor concerns. Additionally, however, with a simple modification they come a great inclusivity tool for students who otherwise might be excluded or given an "alternative" (that often lacks creativity).

These two products are a low tech version of Assistive Technology. They are wax covered strings that allow students to manipulate them into letters, words, and pictures. These are great for students who are blind, have ADHD, have motor concerns, etc. The image below shows how these things can be used to show comprehension of story.

OpenDyslexic is an Add On for Chrome and software that you can download to your computer. It allows users to change the font of websites and documents into a font that is easier to read and distinguishes between letters that can be easily confused. The images below show a BBC article with and without OpenDyslexic.

This tool is available for those who have Apple devices and airpods. This provides users with the ability to focus on a single source of audio and tune out the extra noises around them. This can be useful for those with processing concerns, ADHD, sensory concerns, migraines, etc.

Skitch is an app that can connect to any curriculum. It is an app that allows someone to take an image or document and mark it using notes, drawing, and emojis. Skitch provides a variety of differentiating options as it allows writing, arrows, emojis, exclamatory punctuation, etc. It is incredibly easy to use with little introduction. Skitch is available for free on Apple products but is made by Evernote, which is available across platforms. Examples below are from a Latin II class and include annotated versions of a story and a story listening activity.

Notability is an app for Apple devices that costs $8.99 (as of 19 December 2019). This app allows users to do what Evernote and Skitch do, but with a wider variety of options. Much like Skitch and Evernote, this is a note taking app but also includes the capabilities of adding lines, grid, or dots to a paper, GIFs, images, video, etc.
