New Year, New Classroom

10/30/2023

The 2023-2024 school year has begun and for me it is full of changes. I not only moved to the other side of campus this year, but I changed my academic focus entirely. Last year I taught 4 class of Latin and 1 class of ESOL Language for the Development of Content Areas. This year I am teaching a full schedule of ESOL classes.
This change has been both exciting and scary (in good ways), but it was the right change for me. I am working with a population that is growing exponentially. I started in August with ~15 students in my ESOL 1 class and we are now at 32 students in October. As our program grows, so do the variety of skills and languages students bring into the classroom. It has been an exciting challenge for me!
Additionally this last summer saw the introduction of Scroll and Grove! This wonderful new endeavor by yours truly and Bob Patrick is still in its infancy, but we are working on things that we are very excited about!
This year has also brought some new and exciting personal changes that I, honestly, am not sure if (or how much) I'll share, but it is all good! I bring that up to say I'm not sure what kind of schedule I can commit to when posting here or sharing materials, but I am going to try now that things are settling in for me all around.
All this to say, there will be some changes to my website! I am beginning work on organising and re-working pages for ease of access as well as ensuring that the latest work and shares are obvious. In the meantime, here are some things I'm working on and plan on sharing.
  • I will be reworking my site categories. Namely, you'll see some pages archived (Teaching and COVID, for example).
  • Some pages will be revamped (The technology and Special Ed pages will be reworked entirely - but this is a long project, so I would ask for patience).
  • Some pages will be updated.
I will still be sharing a variety of posts, plans, and resources for teachers. I will be sharing in a few different places depending on the work:
  • For Scroll and Grove publications, please check that website.
  • Original artwork and some free publications will be shared on this website.
  • Some free and all paid publications will be shared on Teacher Pay Teachers.

Find Me on Academia!

Recently I became aware of Academia.edu. It is a site that has logs of free access to a variety of articles and authors that you might otherwise didn't know existed! I was searching for an article that contained some particularly difficult to find Latin text and found it on Academia.edu.

I have officially built my profile there and uploaded two of my professional papers! You can, as always, access them on this site, but you can also access them there. Happy article hunting!

Spring 2022 Current Projects and Updates

  1. New Series - Working with All Types of Learners
    1. This series will focus on working with learners of various types and the things I do daily to support them. I am currently planning to include the 13 disabled/special education categories as well as gifted learners, ELL learners, and learners with chronic absenteeism.
    2. This series will not be language specific but examples will come from my Latin and ELL classrooms.
    3. This series will not be focused on pandemic learning, but that will certainly be an aspect I talk about and how I support students in both the physical classroom and in the digital classroom.
  2. Coming Soon - ELL lessons and resources
    1. As I approach the end of my first year officially teaching an ELL class, I plan to put together some of my favourite resources this year and lessons. Some of these will be available here or on my Teachers Pay Teachers account for either free or a fee. Resources so far are set to include:
      1. Gimkit and Blooket links for themed vocabulary
      2. My favourite TPT resources I used this year
      3. How I incorporated an interactive notebook into my plans this year
  3. In Progress - Medea: fabula amoris. I truly hope to have this novella out this year. I am currently working on:
    1. final piece of artwork
    2. glossary
