Social Justice in the Latin Classroom

5/28/2020

Firstly, I must thank Bolchazy-Carducci for this wonderful opportunity. When they asked me to consider giving a webinar on this subject, I knew I wanted to expand upon the ideas put forth in Rachel and my original presentation (originally presented at AWLA and subsequently at FLAG and ACTFL). This particular presentation, presented Tuesday 19 May 2020, focuses on the practical ways we can bring social justice into the Latin classroom. It includes suggestions for:
  • making materials more accessible
  • allowing students to see themselves in every aspect of your classroom
  • working within "reality pedagogy" (Christopher Emdin, 2016)
  • Reconsidering the canon and alternatives
  • including real conversation on potentially triggering topics

Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or if you'd like to chat. I am always up for a conversation on these topics.
